LG mobile phone | LG G5 - Unique and innovative with design new of its kind

Mobile Phone | The LG G5 is one of the biggest phones to launch in 2016 – and we're not just talking in the Android world. It's one of the heavyweights with the G5's alternative and innovative modular design.

With the LG G5 is an all-metal smartphone, the metal and glass smoothly float together uninterrupted, without an antenna slot.

LG has taken the bold decision to shake things up with the G5. Far from being a new version of the LG G4, the phone is different in a lot of ways.

The modular design of the LG G5 you can't replace or upgrade individual parts. Instead the chin of the phone is removable which, for starters, gives access to the battery It allows users to drop the battery out and load a new one, or you can use it to attach the likes of additional camera hardware, with the "modular expansion system" by LG (something which isn't a feature of the S7). It also means you can add modules should you want to buy them separately.

These modules are called 'LG Friends' and the main one is a clip on battery pack which adds some photography controls called the Cam Plus which is the cheapest at £69. Audiophiles fans will be tempted by the Hi-Fi Plus from B&O which is a DAC (digital to analogue converter) – it costs a bit more at £149.

In General, the future of the G5 and its modules (LG or third party) is unclear so it makes it difficult to come to a conclusion on this element.

The screen is a 5.3ins QHD display and offers a pixel density of 544ppi and a resolution of 2560x1440. (note, It's slightly smaller than the LG G4's screen, which measured 5.5ins)

The LG G5 powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor – something which the chipmaker essentially announced on Twitter before the launch. It's a quad-core chip and has an Adreno 530 GPU all backed up by 4GB of RAM which looks like it will be the standard for many Android flagships this year. Storage sits at 32GB and LG continues to offer expandable storage with the Micro-SD card slot which supports up to 200GB cards.

Both rear cameras can shoot video, and both have stabilization and support recording at 4K. The only box left unchecked is 1080p at 60fps, which is frustrating if that's your preferred mode.

There’s no ability to display two apps at once which is a shame. Instead LG offers Qslide which means certain apps, such as calendar and calculator, can be used in a floating style with a transparency slider.

Mobile Phone | Picks from the critics:

The LG G5 is one of the most radical phones to come along in a while and we’re glad the firm has shaken things up with the modular design. The G5 is innovative and interesting with unique features but it’s a shame the design and build feels unfinished in areas. It’s a top-notch device which can hold its own with the best phones in performance and cameras, but it’s LG’s modular design which is the real selling point here. There is bags of potential but the future of this is unclear so it’s hard to be definite right now. The G5 is one of the best phones around but for completely different reasons to the Galaxy S7. Says pcadvisor

The LG G5 is one of the most interesting smartphones I’ve seen since the days of the LG Optimus 3D, and for that, I find myself predisposed to liking it. The trouble with the G5 is that, although ingenious, I’m not convinced it’s enough to get consumers to switch from the tried and tested.

People will still love their iPhones and Samsung Galaxy handsets no matter what LG does with its modular battery bay and accessories, simply because those phones are known quantities, and the LG G5 isn’t a big enough step forward.

I think it’s the price that will ultimately undermine the case for the LG G5, however. Buy it SIM free and it’s less expensive than the Samsung Galaxy S7 (but not by much), while on contract, prices are around the same. And yet in most key areas - battery life, camera quality, screen quality, and performance - it’s either on par or slightly behind. If you don’t want to spend this much, the Nexus 6P offers slightly slower performance and a less clever design, but an all-round package that’s almost as good for less cash.

Having said all that, though, the LG G5 is still a great smartphone, and if you’re upgrading from a two-year-old model from any manufacturer, you’ll love the speed boost and camera quality it brings with it, and especially that wide-angle snapper. It’s a five-star smartphone, then, but it isn’t quite the best. says alphr

The LG G5's modular party pieces are yet to be fully realized, but away from that you've got a supremely solid flagship smartphone - if only the battery was a bit better. says techradar
